Ernie ran in 313 races over 12 years with 15 wins, 124 top 10’s and 22 poles.
He first got into racing go karts at age 9. Winning the championship at age 15.
In 1975 Ernie won the first stock car race he entered.
Ernie’s first mark in NASCAR was welding seats into the grandstands at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Ernie made his Cup debut in Sept 13,1987 driving the #56 car built by Marc Reno and sponsored by Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway.
He lost the Rookie Of The Year battle by 3 points. The closest in NASCAR history to Ken Bouchard
In the 90’s Ernie drove for Morgan McClure Motorsports and his first win came at Bristol August 25, 1990 .
Ernie’s aggressive driving style earned him his nickname, his driving was so controversial that he apologized for it during a drivers meeting.
In 1993 Ernie became driver for Robert Yates Racing after the tragic loss of Davey Allison. In his 4th race with the team he won and dedicated the win to Davey.
August 1994 Ernie was a close contender for the title trailing leader Dale Earnhardt by 27 points.
The morning of August 20th Ernie’s car blew a tire during practice and he hit the wall at 170 mph. Leaving him with brain, lung and eye injuries and uncertainty if he would make it through the night.
By September he was in fair condition.
October 1995 Ernie was back in his Cup car
In 1996 at Daytona he qualified 2nd to Dale Earnhardt and won the 125 dual .
That year Ernie finished 10th place in the point standings with 2 wins, 12 top 5s,16 top 10s and led 15 of 31 races.
June 1997 Ernie was victorious at the track that almost claimed his life.
He ended that season with 5 top 5 s, 13 top 10s, 2 poles.
In 1998 Ernie moved to MB2 MOTORSPORTS as driver of the #36 Skittles car. He suffered an injury and missed the last 3 races that season
On August 20, 1999 exactly 5 years after his near fatal wreck Ernie wrecked again at Michigan while driving in the Truck Series and was airlifted to the hospital with head and lung injuries.
September 3, 1999 Ernie announced his retirement.
